Trends in Electrical and Computer Engineering Research Dollars
The fields of electrical and electrical/computer engineering attract roughly 18 percent of total engineering research funding. This month’s Databyte tracks the flow of research dollars to U.S. engineering schools in those disciplines over the past decade. In 2014, ASEE member schools reported a total of $1.51 billion in research funding in electrical and electrical/computer engineering, a 14 percent gain since 2005. ASEE profile surveys indicate that the federal government continues to contribute the lion’s share (70 percent in 2014) of total research expenditures, followed by industry (16 percent). States’ shares shrank by half between 2005 and 2014. Over the same period, dollars from local and foreign sources jumped fivefold while industry and federal funding increased 34 percent and 14 percent respectively.
