Research Expenditure Trends in U.S. Engineering Schools
ASEE has been tracking research dollars to U.S. engineering schools, by funding source, since 1998. The data collected by the profile surveys indicate that the federal government continues to contribute the lion’s share of total research expenditures, followed by states and industry. In 2013, ASEE member schools had a total of $8.5 billion* in research funding, a growth rate of roughly 4 percent a year since 2001. States’ share of research funding declined by 4 percentage points over that period, while the share from local and foreign sources increased. Federal funding for engineering research increased at a 7 percent annual rate until 2011, when it reached $6 billion. Since then, however, the U.S. government has scaled back, dropping its contribution to $5.87 billion in 2013.
* Of ASEE’s 351 member schools, 57.3 percent reported their research expenditures.
