Undergraduate Engineering Student Entry & Persistence Compared with Other Fields of Study
Each of the graphics on these pages represents a field of study chosen by students who entered college in the 2003-2004 school year. The top bar (shades of blue) shows at what point in their college careers these students picked a major. As shown below, students tended to gravitate early toward engineering/technologies – a combined category that includes science technology majors. The brown-red-pink bar shows persistence and attrition rates, by field, among the same cohort of students. Engineering/technologies students persist to graduation at a higher rate than do students in other fields. However, they are in the middle range when it comes to dropping out of college altogether.
