Slight Shifts in Undergraduate Demographics
The illustrations on these pages show undergraduate enrollment in engineering by race, ethnicity, and gender in 2017, drawn from ASEE’s Profiles of Engineering and Engineering Technology Colleges. The top three ethnic groups are still Caucasians, Hispanic-Americans, and Asian-Americans. However, compared with 2016, the percentage of Caucasians has dropped by 1.0 percent; the percentage of Hispanic-Americans has increased by 0.69 percent; and the percentage of Asian Americans has increased by 0.69 percent. (All changes are calculated in absolute percentages.) The gender gap between female and male has decreased from 56.7 percent in 2016 to 55.4 percent 2017, continuing a shrinkage trend.
